Kulim Forest Restaurant

Together with Ah Liew and Ah Moi, we went to Kulim for another round of food hunting.  This restaurant was opened for business just 6 months ago.  Everything here still relatively new.  Incidentally this restaurant was located within a durian farm.  Since I am not a durian fan, didn't ask which type of durian grown here.

We ordered deep fried Patin fish with light soy sauce, Nestum prawn, herbal steamed egg and  hotplate taufu.  The food quality here just average.  Myself and Ah Moi agreed Sg Kob is a better place for the fresh water fish.  BTW, I heard Sg Kob restaurant already moved to new location.

Kolam Ikan Restaurant, Sg Kob Kulim

Personally, I'm not the person who like fish so much, especially those fresh water fishes. I cannot withstand the awful smell if the fish not fresh enough. One day, my babysitter (also 'makan-kaki') asked me and my family to tag along with her kids and it took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to reach this 'Sang-ka-la' place, somewhere in the palm tree estate. Yes, you heard it right, in the middle of palm tree estate. The owner make a few fish ponds within the estate and this make the fish so fresh-to-table. There got Sultan fish, Patin fish, 'Fei Chow' aka Talapia fish etc. After this trip, I got whole different perspective about fresh water fish, 'Ho Chiak'.

Axian make this place famous again?

Sorry, just natural aircond. Be prepared that this place got lots of flies.

Deep fried Patin fish, with light soy sauce. Highly recommended.

Steamed garlic 'Fei Chow' fish. Highly recommended.

Stir-fried mushroom.

Kemunting Lake View Restaurant, Kulim

This is another place that serves fresh water fishes. Not far away from Kolam Ikan Restaurant, Sungai Kob.

The floating restaurant is built on the lake, whereas Kolam Ikan Restaurant is located within the palm tree estate. Here, the place is more hygienic, less flies and easy access by elderly people.

So, is the food here better than Kolam Ikan Restaurant? Emm...

Main entrance to the floating restaurant.

'Sa-Be Fei Chow' fish, aka 3-Flavours Talapia Fish. Nothing to shout about.

Claypot Tauhu. So so only.

Deep fried Patin fish, with light soy sauce. Somehow, I still prefer the same dish prepared by Kolam Air Restaurant. The soy sauce used by the latter smell and taste better.

Stir-fried vegetable.

Makan-Makan @ Kulim, Kedah

Kulim is a district of Kedah. It is about 20km or 30 minutes drive from my home. We have heard about the nice foods around Kulim town.

The first stop is Ria Kopitiam (along Jalan Tunku Ibrahim), just next to the old Kapitol cinema. Inside this Kopitiam, you will find a nice and tasty Hokkien Mee aka Penang Prawn Mee.

The next stop is Hong Ta Restaurant, just opposite Kapitol cinema. Here got one stall selling Wantan mee, the stall name is "Tan Kee". I heard during peak time, got a lots of customer and long queue.

If you don't have enough yet, you can try another Wantan Mee at "Lum Kee" shop. Just about 100m from the Ria Kopitiam. The noodle is handmade and quite nice. I like the fried Wantan and "Siu-Kaw".

Still not enough, no problem. You can try the famous Laksa at Jalan Kelang Lama, nearby SJK(C) Kelang Lama. Here, the ABC aka Ais Kacang also not bad. The laksa here taste a little bit sour, whereas Penang laksa taste a little bit sweet. If you like, you can take the prawn cracker with the laksa (same like Jawi style laksa).

Since you are here already, why not buy some Chai-Kueh (just next to the house that selling laksa). The Chai-Kueh skin is very Q and the filling is very tasty.
