Haji Mohd Tokun Mee Kuah Ketam @ Bukit Mertajam

Some say it is the best around Bukit Mertajam. The warung is located just next the to main road, i.e. Jalan Kulim. Don't play play, this small warung got 7 workers to support. You can guess how good is the business.

Now, the mee goreng is going to cost you RM3.50/plate, a steep rise from RM2.50/plate couple years ago. Unlike typical Chinese stalls, they don't sell big or small portions. Don't worry, the portion is big enough for an adult like me.

The secret weapon of the delicious mee goreng is the spicy cuttlefish. It blends nicely with the fried noodles and it is hot. You better prepare yourself with a glass of cool coconut drink.

D Kuang Seafood Restaurant @ Bukit Mertajam

This restaurant is located along Jalan Berjaya, just nearby Kampung Baru. We passed by this place many times and somehow not aware of this restaurant.

Today, we just ordered normal dishes, clay pot curry fish (RM12, small), deep fried squid (Rm8, small) and marmite chicken (RM8, small). The curry fish is just above average, sour but not so spicy. Talking about curry fish, I still prefer from Lok Yuan Restaurant @ Bukit Tengah. Here, I would recommend the deep fried squid, very crispy till the last piece and best to dip with chili sauce (>>> Anything taste nice is not good for your health, too bad <<<). Last at not least, the marmite chicken also nice and my kids love it.

Zhu Ling Village Centre @ Kubang Semang, BM

A friend of mine recommends this place. According to him, this place is cheaper than Khun Thai @ Butterworth and the food is great. I have not visited Khun Thai and therefore I cannot make any comparison.

Equipped with GPS device, I have no problem to locate this place. The only confusion is the restaurant name. On the sign board beside main road, it stated as Zhu Ling Village Centre but the name given by my friend was Bamboo Thai Restaurant, no wonder we missed this place on the first attempt. Luckily my friend told me to observe the sign board before the school and we managed to locate this place after another searching mission. To those interested about the place, watch out this sign board just before SRJ(K) Kubang Semang school, then take the small road beside the school and the restaurant is just located about 1km from the main road. I asked the restaurant owner why the restaurant name is different and according to him, he cannot register the Bamboo Thai name as someone already registered it. Too bad.

I was surprised and impressed to see the restaurant is quite big, clean and nicely decorated with those bamboo huts. We arrived about 1:30pm and we are the only customers. Wow, look like we book the entire restaurant, ha ha.

We ordered,
- Whole Fresh Coconut - RM3.00/pc
- White Seafood Tomyam - RM25 (small)
- Golden Prawn Cake - RM2.50/pc
- Pandan Chicken - RM2.00/pc
- Mix 4 (sambal stir fry with 4 types of bean: long bean, lady finger, coconut shoot & angled bean) - RM10 (small)
- White Rice

The Prawn Cake is crispy outside but inside the prawn meat very Q. Yes, we like it so much. The Mix 4 also nice, actually this is the first time we try on coconut shoot, very crunchy. The White Tomyam is just so so, perhaps not enough spicy kick. Overall we paid for RM54.50, with the foods that we ordered and the nice environment (not to mention we 'book' the entire restaurant), it really worth it.

Pan Fried Bread @ Taman Sri Rambai Market (南美園), BM

The bread is laterally fried on the hot pan without any oil. Got various filling like coconut, peanut, red bean paste and lotus paste. I personally like the peanut. If you drop by the market, just give it a try and eat healthy at least for once. The price is RM0.80 per piece.

Best Yam Rice @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Yam rice somehow is quite popular around Penang Mainland. From Chai Leng Park to Juru to Bukit Mertajam, you can find many kopitiams are sellings Yam rice. The Yam rice is served with "Kiam Chai" soup with tons of pig's spare parts (i.e. meat, meat ball, intestine, stomach, tongue, kidney, liver etc.). Simply delicious!!!

I had tried many and Bukit Mertajam Yam Rice is the best. The Yam rice is so fragrance, yummy and the "Kiam Chai" soup is not too sour, just taste nice. The spare parts must consume with the special black & chilli combination souce, just superb...

Bukit Mertajam Char Koay Teow Shootout

Not only Penang's Lorong Selamat or 'Sisters' are famous for Char Koay Teow, Bukit Mertajam also has few stalls that serve delicious Char Koay Teow (炒馃条) and cheaper of course.

I'm going to recommend 3 stalls for you to choose. Here are some commonalities that I observed among these stalls.
  • Use charcoal instead of gas
  • Fried with duck egg instead of chicken egg
  • Fried with lots of lards, delicious...
  • Fried upto 8 plates in one go. Sorry dude, no individual fried Koay Teow here.
  • Prawns only go into Wok in the middle of Char process. Therefore the prawns are not overly cook.
  • Use Coka-Cola bottles to contain soya sauce.
  • RM2.50 per plate (small serving). No way you can get this price in Penang Island.
  • Open late, better go after 9pm.
Stall#1 is located at Jalan Pasar (approx 5°21'54"N 100°27'37"E)

Stall#2 is located at Jalan Stesen (approx 5°21'44"N 100°27'40"E)

Stall#3 is located at Jalan Kuari (approx 5°21'17"N 100°28'10"E) --> some say this stall serves the best Char Koay Teow in Bukit Mertajam town.
